District Contributions and Limits
The Michigan Campaign Finance Act provides for public disclosure of the funds spent and received to support or oppose people and issues on the ballot. The Committee to Elect Judy Truesdell is required to disclose all contributions of money regardless of amount. To assist our volunteers in helping us comply with Michigan law, we have prepared a summary of the contributions and limits and exceptions, which are listed below. Two forms – a direct (money) contribution and an in-kind (services and goods) -are included with instructions for completing each.
Michigan law states that for a State Representative candidate, the limit that an individual can contribute toward that person's campaign is $500
- All contributions (both direct and in-kind) accumulate together toward that contribution limit throughout the election cycle
- Direct contributions up to $20.00 may be cash
- Contributions over $20 must be paid by a written instrument such as a check, credit card or money order.
- For individuals contributing over $100, the occupation, employer and business address also are required
- Values reported for in-kind contributions must reflect usual and normal market value (the value of special discounts would count as an in-kind contribution)
Exceptions to the contributions and limits are as follows:
- A volunteer's personal services cannot be reimbursed
- A volunteer's campaign travel and lodging up to $500 per year can be counted in addition to the $500 individual contribution limit
- A volunteer's donation of food and beverage up to $100 per year can be counted in addition to the $500 individual contribution limit
Finally as a reminder, any anonymous contributions made to this campaign must be given to a tax exempt charity.
