Why Elect Judy Truesdell?
My Reason for Running for State Rep
I've lived in Niles for 38 years and my experiences over those years in business, as a mother and wife, my community involvement and in the last 10 years as an elected trustee at LMC, acquainted me with many of the pressing issues facing our district. For too long, we had a one party rule with a legislator who was very closed and inaccessible. Because I believe that government is in the business for its people, I felt I could change that. And I almost did, losing by a razor thin margin.
For too long, we had a one party rule with a legislator who was very closed and inaccessible.
After my loss in 2006, I realized there was much I still had to learn. So before making my decision to run again, I began a year-long process of meetings, interviews and discussions. I attended a day long event with young aspiring entrepreneurial students; went to Washington D.C., to attend meetings that addressed diversity issues in education; visited with district municipal leaders to talk about funding issues; met with several area farmers to learn first hand their needs and concerns; reviewed new K-12 curriculum concepts and promoted the inclusion of an agri-business curriculum at the community college level; attending conferences to hear from state experts; met with state Democratic party leaders and participated in agricultural and economic forums and tours. I also served as a lead on a special school bond proposal committee to help raise the public's awareness about the need for a millage increase. What I gained from these experiences was more than just knowledge. It was a reconfirmation that our district is rich in people, business talent and an array of economic opportunities from tourism to agricultural diversity that few other regions can boast. And it was a reaffirmation for me that our district continues to be overlooked and that our citizen' needs remain unheard. I continue to believe that the combination of my experience, knowledge and leadership skills can become a catalyst for needed change both in the District and Lansing and my voice of reason and purpose a champion for the people of the 78th district.
